HIGHLANDS, NORTH CAROLINA
A Chic Mountain Escape Filled with Cozy Relaxed Luxury, and Perfect Weather
There’s something truly special about escaping to the mountains—and Highlands, North Carolina has become one of my absolute favorite places to do just that. This charming town tucked high in the Blue Ridge Mountains offers a magical mix of cooler summer temps, luxurious accommodations, top-notch dining, and picture-perfect scenery.
We recently spent a long holiday weekend here celebrating dear friends getting married, and it ended up being one of those trips that stays with you. The kind where everything—from the peaceful setting to the unexpected moments—just aligned. It was the perfect blend of friend time, romantic moments, and much-needed relaxation.
Where We Stayed: Half-Mile Farm
This was our first time staying at Half-Mile Farm, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it might be one of my favorite hotels anywhere. It’s the adults-only sister property of the iconic Old Edwards Inn, and while I absolutely love both, Half-Mile offers something a little different—something quieter, more tucked away, more serene.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with champagne cocktails and a personal tour around the property. The warm welcome immediately set the tone. Our room had just been renovated with cozy, high-end touches like heated tile floors, a walk-in rainfall shower, heated towel racks, and elegant mountain-inspired interiors that feel equal parts polished and comforting.
Every morning, we woke up to the scent of fresh-baked pastries drifting from the main house. Their included chef-made breakfast is truly exceptional—I’m talking fresh juices, local teas, a little surprise pastry starter, and main dishes like lemon ricotta pancakes with house-made sausage patties or short rib hash with eggs. It’s different every day, and always beautifully plated and full of flavor. I loved it so much, I grabbed their cookbook to take a little piece of that experience home.
We spent our days canoeing on the lake, lounging by the heated pool, and wandering the wooded walking path that loops through the property. The on-site bar became a favorite spot of ours—sipping a cocktail while overlooking the lake in the late afternoon sun felt like peak peace.
And even though it feels completely secluded, Half-Mile is just a 5-minute drive from Main Street. It was the perfect balance of privacy and access
A Trendy Alternative: The Outpost Inn
If you’re looking for something more affordable but still chic and design-forward, I have to mention the Outpost Inn. A few of our friends stayed here, and I was so impressed by the vibe. It’s trendy and charming, with a stylish mountain-modern aesthetic and thoughtful touches throughout.
The best part? It’s totally walkable to town—right near the shops, restaurants, and bars of Main Street—so you’re right in the heart of everything. It has a cool boutique feel, ideal for couples or small groups of friends who want something a little more casual but still memorable. I’d absolutely stay here in the future and recommend it for those who want Highlands charm on a smaller budget.
Favorite Pastime: Wandering the Side Streets
One of our favorite things to do in Highlands is just stroll. Not on a trail (though there are plenty of beautiful ones), but through town—particularly the quiet side streets off Main Street. The homes here are so charming, full of character, lush gardens, and architectural detail. We wandered for hours, soaking in the perfect mountain weather that Highlands is known for—even in July, it was crisp and cool while the rest of the South was sweltering.
Romantic Dinner at On The Veranda
We’re always up for trying new places, and On The Veranda completely blew us away. It’s just a few minutes outside of downtown, and I honestly can’t believe we hadn’t been before.
We had the most romantic, candlelit dinner overlooking a small lake and the surrounding forest. The setting was so peaceful and intimate—like being transported to a secret garden. The food was, without question, our favorite meal of the trip. The Seared Sea Scallops over angel hair pasta in a ginger scallion sauce were absolutely perfect, and the Maine Lobster Piccata tail was rich, bright, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing—truly one of those meals where everything just clicks.
If you’re planning a visit, make a reservation here. It’s just outside the hustle of downtown and so worth the VERY short drive.
July 4th Magic at Stubborn Bull
We totally lucked out with our 4th of July dinner reservation at Stubborn Bull, a newer Latin-inspired spot right in town. We were expecting a fun dinner with friends—and ended up with the best seat in the house for the fireworks!
The restaurant has this vibrant, high-energy vibe with great cocktails and bold, shareable dishes, and we were seated right near their large open windows. As the fireworks began, we had front-row views of the show, cocktail in hand, surrounded by people we love. It was one of those unexpected, unforgettable moments that made the night even more special.
Drinks & Live Music at Old Edwards Inn
Even though we didn’t stay there this time, we made sure to visit one of our very favorite spots - Old Edwards Inn, especially their Wine Garden and rooftop restaurant.
The Wine Garden is one of my favorite hidden gems in Highlands. With ivy-covered walls, bubbling fountains, string lights, and a waterfall tucked into the garden, it’s a magical place to enjoy lunch or a glass of wine. The vibe feels timeless—elegant but unfussy—with live music on certain nights that adds to the relaxed, romantic atmosphere.
Upstairs, the rooftop bar offers a breezier vibe with open-air seating, cocktails under the stars, and live music that draws both guests and locals. It’s the perfect place to wind down after dinner or kick off the night before heading to a show or event in town.
Old Edwards Inn itself is iconic. The property is European in feel—full of stone walls, flower-lined walkways, and luxurious spa experiences. It’s right in the heart of Main Street and makes a fabulous option for those wanting to be in the center of it all without sacrificing luxury.
The Most Beautiful Wedding at The Vineyard at High Holly
The heart of our trip was celebrating close friends at their gorgeous wedding at The Vineyard At High Holly located about 20 minutes outside of downtown Highlands. I honestly can’t think of a more breathtaking setting.
Perched on top of a mountain, the vineyard overlooks rolling hills and has that perfect blend of elegance and rustic charm. The ceremony space was surrounded by nature, and the views during cocktail hour were unreal. Whether you’re attending a wedding or planning one of your own, High Holly is a must-see. I’d also recommend stopping by even just for a wine tasting—it’s that special. Quiet, tucked-away, and full of charm.
Where Else We Ate (And Loved):
Stubborn Buddha – Loved the spicy tuna rolls, Thai curry, and sake pairings. Modern, casual, and great for sushi lovers.
The Highlands Supper Club – Such a fun brunch spot with a vintage vibe. I had truffle eggs, and the duck hash was divine.
Highlander Mountain House / Ruffed Grouse Tavern – A Highlands favorite. The vintage interiors, cozy fireplace, and locally inspired menu are not to be missed.
A Few Favorite Hikes:
Dry Falls – You can literally walk behind the waterfall. Quick and magical.
Sunset Rock – Short hike, amazing views over the town.
Glen Falls – More moderate, but worth the effort for the cascading falls and peaceful setting.
This was one of those weekends that felt like a gift—from the beautiful wedding and magical meals to the peaceful mornings at Half-Mile Farm and the cool breeze in the air. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, attending a wedding, or just need a break from the summer heat, Highlands delivers.
It’s a place that invites you to slow down, sip something delicious, and soak in every little moment.
